The giant otter
The giant otter (lobo de río, londra, ariranha, nutria gigante) is one of the most endangered mammal species in South America. It was reduced to very low population levels throughout its distribution range between 1930 and 1970. Recently, the species has been recovering in remote areas of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins and in the Pantanal. It is a species which is very vulnerable to the many threats that affect aquatic habitat quality. Joint conservation efforts are necessary to avoid local extinctions of the species as well as to guide recuperation of its populations. This webpage is a small contribution towards this goal.
This WebPage is an initiative from the members of the UICN Giant Otter group (see PDF). It was created on the 1st of October 2008, with the aim to distribute information on giant otter distribution, sampling methodology, threats, and so on. It will also provide monthly messages containing information on conservation actions, research notes, etc. To make it available to the widest public, the page will be available in 5 languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, English and Dutch. It will gradually be constructed in the course of more or less one year. We invite all of you to contribute with ideas and suggestions ...
Links. The pteronura.org webpage will have active links with other relevant web pages, such as the UICN web page (www.uicn.org) and giantotterresearch.com, an English-language page administered by Nicole Duplaix. It will also keep active links with relevant national webpages. For recent bibliography on the species, we channel you to a page in Nicole’s webpage: www.giantotterresearch.org/bibliography.html .
We will also establish a link to the giant otter newsletter “Friends of the Giant Otter”. {Contact Us}
